MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 12

Los Angeles Angels vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
The Great American Ballpark – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, we’ll see the Angels come to the plate. That’s good news for NRFI bettors as they’ve fallen into the bottom third of the league when it comes to first inning scoring. They’ve also scored three or less runs in three of their last four games. That shouldn’t get any easier with Andrew Abbott on the bump. He’s rocking a 3.18 ERA over the first three starts of the year. More importantly, at least to us, he has given up just 0.33 runs per inning over innings 1-3 this year.

If the top of the first is a breeze, the bottom of the first should be even less of a sweat. The Reds come to the plate here at home – which is already a pitcher friendly park. Not only that, but they are also 29th in the league in terms of run scoring with just 3.20 runs per game. Now they have one of their toughest pitching matchups of the year with the white-hot Jose Soriano on the bump. He’s 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA on the year. He’s also struck out 21 in just 20.0 innings of work. The Reds offense should help him keep that going here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 12: No (-135)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 2:20 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first sees the Pirates coming to the plate at Wrigley. While the Pirates are putting up better numbers than expected, they are still in the middle of the pack when it comes to scoring and scoring in the first. They have also been duds on offense as of late, with just eight runs in their last three games combined. Jameson Taillon will try to keep that going, and he’s a great candidate to do so. He’s allowed just three earned runs over his 10.2 innings pitched this year – which comes out to a 2.53 ERA. With as bad as the Pirates have been, he should be able to lower that here.

The Cubs have also not been setting the world on fire with their hitting. They rank 23rd in the majors in first inning scoring. Not only that, but they have only scored nine total runs in their last three games. Looking to keep that trend going is fireballer Bubba Chandler. In 8.2 innings of work this year, he has 10 strikeouts and just three runs allowed. His walks continue to be his biggest problem, but if he can keep them in check, this should cash with no problem.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 12: No (+120)
