MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 9

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, the Diamondbacks lineup steps up to see what they can get done against Molan McLean. McLean has been solid through his first two starts. He carries just a 2.61 ERA into action and has 12 strikeouts in 10.1 innings this year. More importantly, he hasn’t given up an earned run in a first inning yet. Arizona ranks in the bottom third of the league when it comes to run scoring. Their 3.75 runs per game and certainly doesn’t scare me here.

The Mets bats are looking a lot scarier than Arizona, but I’ve got faith in the arm of Eduardo Rodriguez to carry us to an NRFI here. He’s been outstanding so far this year. Not only does he have a pair of outings with no earned runs on the year, but he has allowed just eight hits over 12.0 innings of work. The Mets might test that 0.00 ERA here, but it probably won’t be until after he’s recorded three outs for us.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 9: No (-155)

Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres

First Pitch – 9:40 pm EST
Petco Park – San Diego, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Rockies come to the plate first in this one. Despite being a team that gets the added bonus of playing in the thin air regularly, they are still in the middle of the pack in terms of run scoring. They won’t have those benefits in this one as they head down to San Diego for an away game. They’ll also have to deal with the arm of Randy Vasquez – a man who has allowed just one run over 12.0 innings of work this year. Add in that he’s mowed down 11 batters on the season already, and I love how easy this one should start for us.

The bottom of the inning comes with a little uncertainty. Nobody is quite sure who the Rockies are going to put on the bump for Thursday. It’s looking like it could be an opener or maybe a late call up. However, I would take a pitching machine to get the Rockies out in the first inning at this point. Not only have they been rough with the bats this year, but they’ve been one of the very worst teams when it comes to the first inning. They’ve scored just one first inning run all year, which puts them at 0.08 runs per first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 9: No (-130)
