MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 6

San Diego Padres vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We were on the Padres for the last three games – the entire Red Sox series – on the NRFI and cashed each on of them. I see no reason to get off that train here as their hitting is still terrible. They’re 26th in the league in scoring runs and still have only scored once in the first inning all year. Now they get the young fireballer, Bubba Chandler. In his season debut, he did not even allow a hit over 4.1 innings. While walks were an issue for him, the Padres are in the bottom third of the league in drawing walks. As a result, I expect him to be a bit more dailed in and have no issues in the top of the first.

The bottom of the first I expect to be a bit more of a sweat. The Pirates have been shockingly good in almost all parts of their offense. They are scoring early, often, and are on a nice win streak. Despite that, I do expect them to come back to Earth a little here. German Marquez will be the one looking to do it. While he didn’t quite have the first start that Bubba Chandler did, he does look like he’s healthy for the first time in awhile. I wouldn’t look for a great outing from him, but three quick outs should be within reach.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 6: No (-115)

Atlanta Braves vs. Los Angeles Angels

First Pitch – 9:38 pm EST
Angel Stadium – Anaheim, CA
Broadcast – ESPN

The Braves have shot out of the gate with a solid record. However, that has far more to do with their pitching staff ranking #1 in terms of ERA than it does their bats. I expect a slow start on Monday with Jose Soriano on the bump for the Angels. He’s entering his third starts of the season with 12.0 innings under his belt and just four hits allowed. He hasn’t surrendered a run as of yet and I’m not counting on the Braves to break that in the first inning of the game.

In the bottom of the inning, there’s not much to worry about either. 2024 Cy Young winner Chris Sale takes the ball again for the Braves. He also has allowed just four hits in 12.0 innings in this short season. He’s racked up nine strikeouts in that span, which is honestly less than his stuff could produce. Expect him to get those numbers up a bit here against a Los Angeles lineup that ranks 28th in terms of strikeouts. When he does we should get a clean first frame.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 6: No (-145)
