MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 1

Athletics vs. Atlanta Braves

First Pitch – 12:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Athletics notched their first win of the season on Tuesday with a 5-2 win over the Braves. Those five runs brought their season total up to just 16 (or 3.2 per game). Those cold bats have been even colder in the first frame where they are one of just six teams who have no managed to put up a first inning run. Now they’ll have the ill fortune of having to face Chris Sale. He started the season in typical Sale fashion – holding Kansas City scoreless over six innings. With as good as he’s been and as bad as the Athletics are hitting, the top of the first should be a breeze.

The Braves, while rocking a much better record than the Athletics, haven’t been hitting all that much better. Not only were they held to just two runs on Tuesday, but their average runs per game fell to just 3.8. Luis Severino will now look to make that number worse on Wednesday. His opening day went well as he dealt with a tough Blue Jays lineup. Over the first four innings, he kept the Blue Jays without a run and with just one hit. With that kind of start, you have to imagine he can get us three quick outs here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 1: No (-130)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 12:40 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

Although Pittburgh put up five runs in the second inning, we did manage to cash this NRFI spot on Tuesday. Now we’ll ride with another one here. The Reds go back to the top of their lineup to try to get the job done on Wednesday with Andrew Abbott taking the ball. He was sensational in his first start. He welcomed the Red Sox to the Great American Ballpark with 6.0 scoreless innings. Getting a lineup that is quite a bit easier than Boston’s boppers should mean that the top of our first inning comes sweat-free.

The bottom of the inning should be even easier to cash. The Reds have been one of the very worse run scoring teams this season. In fact, they are one of just five teams who have not cracked the 3.0 runs per game mark. Now they’ll have to try to change that around with Paul Skenes throwing. Despite Skene’s rough line on Opening Day, he looked like himself. Some defensive miscues led to him throwing too many pitches and giving up hits that shouldn’t have been hits. I trust that he’ll return to his Cy Young form to shut them down.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 1: No (-170)
