While I’m usually all over NRFIs to kick off the season, especially with rotations all lined up, I’m thinking we’ll see some early action in this one. Logan Webb is a legitimate ace and take nothing from that, but he does have some not so great history with some of the bats he’ll see at the top of this line up. Trent Grisham is hitting a solid .286 against him lifetime with a third of his hits going for extra bases. Then you have the Aaron Judge of it all. He may have only faced Webb nine times in his career, but the numbers are impressive. He has two walks, and three extra base hits – which includes a pair of homers. That man’s bat alone should be enough to consider this YRFI.
If this does get through the top half of the first and you find yourself sweating the YRFI, don’t fret. Max Fried is, again, a solid front of the line ace. However, he has an awful track record on Opening Day. Last year, his first with the Yankees, saw him give up six runs in just under five innings. In 2024, he gave up three runs and didn’t make it out of the first inning. He looked much better in 2023, but did give up a second inning run to an ugly Nationals lineup. Matt Champman, Rafael Devers and Jung Ho Lee should give the Giants a touch of pop near the top of the order. Combine that fact with Fried’s Opening Day woes and we have something here.
