The advantage here is that the data is usually quite a bit less sharp than when you’re making MMA predictions for the UFC. MMA Regional Pick of the Week: Oktagon 85
Oktagon Heavyweight Fight: Ruben Wolf vs Olutobi Ayodeji Kalejaiye
Card Start Time: Saturday (3/7), 12:00pm EST (Internet PPV)
When the average fan looks at a fight between regional-level heavyweight who share a combined record of 21-22, they might not be rushing to the ticket counter to get in on it. However, this fight has a huge advantage that should make the fight a lot more one-sided than the line suggest.
In his last fight Ruben Wolf controlled the bulk of the action for the first round. He controlled his opponent with some timely takedowns and worked well on the ground – eventually taking his opponent’s back and threatening submissions. Then he stood up and revealed that his knee was compromised. The fight ended there and he’s been out for two years following that fight.
If his grappling game has returned looking even remotely like it was, he should dominate the fight in that realm. Kalejaiye has shown some very questionable decision-making on the mat. In one fight, he was deep in a rear naked choke and instead of fighting the hands, he attempted a foot lock. The move was confusing and obviously didn’t work as he was tapping out seconds later. We saw more of those issues on the ground in his last fight against Patrick Vespaziani, who took him down and finished him with strikes in less than half a round.
Look for Wolf to get that early takedown. If he does, this shouldn’t even make it to the first bell.
