MMA Regional Pick of the Week: LFA 227
LFA 227 Bantamweight Fight: Rafael do Nascimento vs Shuya Kamikubo
Card Start Time: Friday (2/27), 9:00pm EST (VICE TV)
In the main event on Friday, we have a pair of bantamweights that have been nipping at the heels of the big time. For Shuya Kamikubo, a stint on Road to UFC had him just a fight or two away from a UFC contract. On the side of do Nascimento, he faltered in a bout for the LFA 135lbs title that would have had him on shortlists for Dana White’s Contender Series in the fall.
When it comes to the style matchup in this fight, I love the challenger do Nascimento’s chances to spring the upset. While Kamikubo has always been an impressive wrestler, Nascimento brings a jiu jitsu style that should counter that well. He has sneaky submissions that deter opponents from advancing into key positions or landing too much damage.
The other major advantage on the side of the Brazilian is the stand up. He is a much more talented striker in terms of both speed and distance management. The latter of which should be huge in keeping Kamikubo from landing to many takedowns. If he keeps his distance and forces Kamikubo to strike, it should be one way traffic in favor of the underdog here.
