Well, we did it. We made it through the closest thing MMA has to an offseason, and the big dogs, the UFC, are back this week, baby, with UFC 324. But don’t call it a pay-per-view – at least not in the United States. It’s a “numbered event”. For my MMA Underdog Pick of the Week: UFC 324, I’m taking a flyer on a veteran heavyweight. Let’s get it on, c’mon!

MMA Main Card Pick of the Week: UFC 324
UFC 324: Gaethje vs Pimblett
Main Card Start Time: 5:00 PM EST (Paramount+)
There’s no real logical reason to be picking Derrick Lewis to beat Waldo Cortes-Acosta on Saturday’s UFC 324 main card. Other than what I’ve often used to justify a pick in the past – “he hit hard”.
Lewis definitely hits hard – despite his advanced age, he’s still probably the hardest hitter in the sport. And I’m still not convinced that WCA is actually good at this fighting thing. Additionally, I’ve seen his striking defense, which too frequently consists of leaning back, a technique that can lead to being knocked out. With Cortes-Acosta never utilizing any grappling, he’ll stand and trade with Lewis for the duration of the fight, leaving the veteran plenty of chances to land a one-hitter quitter.
