Texas at Duke

Start Time: 8:45 PM EST

Texas and Duke meet in Charlotte, NC, for the Dick Vitale Invitational. There’s a non-zero chance that this one will get ugly for the Longhorns.

The Blue Devils have a host of four-star and five-star recruits and a couple of returning pieces. On pure basketball talent, Duke has Texas outclassed. This is also Duke’s first regular-season game since Cooper Flagg left. There’s also a solid chance that head coach John Scheyer will want to send a message.

Texas also has to travel to North Carolina. Duke will have about 90% of the crowd, and this will feel like a home atmosphere for the Blue Devils.

The Longhorns enter the 2025-26 season with a couple of returning guards and a lot of transfer portal pieces from high-major schools. This is a solid group, but they’ve never really played together. They also have to start their season on the road against a Duke team of McDonald’s all-stars playing close to Durham, NC. Take the Blue Devils to roll in their regular-season debut.

Best Bet: Duke -8.5

Long Beach State at San Diego State

Start Time: 10:00 PM EST

Long Beach State travels to Viejas Arena for a matchup with the Aztecs. It could be a long night for The Beach.

San Diego State features a roster of talented kids that have been in Brian Dutcher’s program for a few seasons, and a couple of solid recruits and transfer portal gets.

Reese Waters returns to San Diego State this year. The Aztecs’ shooting guard missed last year due to injury. He was a capable shooter and solid team player before his injury. He’s expected to play a key role in the San Diego State lineup.

Junior guards BJ Davis and Miles Byrd also return. Davis will run the point, and Byrd is the Aztecs’ top returning scorer.

Pharaoh Compton’s all-around game is back for his sophomore season. Compton is expected to start after spending last year on the bench. Finally, big man Magoon Gwath is also back for another year. Gwath is the Aztecs’ top rim protector and post presence.

Long Beach State has a new roster made of mostly transfer portal gets from other mid-majors. This is a team that should struggle with San Diego State’s defense and discipline. The Beach has a few solid players, but this is not the type of environment or team in which they will succeed. San Diego State should roll in this one.

Best Bet: San Diego State -21.5

Mount St. Mary’s at West Virginia

Start Time: 7:00 PM EST

Mount St. Mary’s travels to Morgantown for a matchup with West Virginia. This is Ross Hodge’s first regular-season home game for the Mountaineers, and he’ll want to set the tone for the season here.

West Virginia has a roster made up of transfer portal gets from high- and mid-major programs, but the pieces fit well together. The rotation looks clear on paper, and the Mountaineers have several role players instead of a collection of stars. West Virginia has shooting, muscle, and size that should clip a few teams in the Big 12 this year, but probably won’t contend for a conference title.

Mount St. Mary’s brings in a roster that will likely finish in the bottom half of the MAAC. The Mount also has a transfer portal roster, but it’s mostly guys who didn’t play much at bigger programs. Mount St. Mary’s will be outmatched in a very hostile environment by a team seeking a blowout win. Lock up West Virginia to win by more than 20.

Best Bet: West Virginia -19
