MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 8

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs

First Pitch – 5:08 pm EST
Wrigley Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – TBS

Kicking off our action on Wednesday are the bats of the Brewers. They came out firing on Monday, putting up a quick three on Shota Imagana. It was clear right away that Imanaga didn’t have his best stuff, and I don’t expect the same here from Jameson Taillon.  Taillon missed the month of July, as well as the beginning of August, with an injury. Since coming back from that, he’s been unstoppable. He’s thrown 28.1 innings in that time and allowed just six earned runs. That comes out to a 1.91 ERA in that span. Regardless as to how well the Brew Crew are hitting right now, I like Taillon’s chances of getting us a clean first frame.

In the bottom of the inning, we have the Cubs, who also got off to a hot start on Monday. They, too, scored three runs in the first. The difference was that after that, their offense went radio silent. Their three run showing brings them up to just 12 runs over their five-game playoff run (or 2.4 per game). That’s not much to write home about and I expect Quinn Priester to make it worse. August 10th was the last time Priester allowed more than three earned runs in a start. In six of those seven starts, he allowed two or less. I like his chances of making it nine straight scoreless innings for the Cubs here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 8: No (-160)

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

First Pitch – 9:08 pm EST
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, CA
Broadcast – TBS

The Phillies are another team with their bats ice-cold at this stage of the season. They stretched across three runs in a losing effort in Game 2, which brings their five-game total up to 11 (2.2 per game). Now they have to face Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who hasn’t allowed an earned run since September 12th. That’s 24.0 straight innings without allowing an earned run to cross the plate. That span also includes 31 strikeouts. If the Phillies are cold, this is the opposite of what they want to see on Wednesday.

Aaron Nola gets the ball in the home half, which is undoubtedly while the NRFI odds are hovering around even money. His season numbers are pretty ugly and this will be his first stat of the postseason. With that being said, I still like the NRFI for two reasons. The first is that he ended the year on a high note. He went 8.0 strong against the Twins in his last start, allowing just one earned run with nine strikeouts. The second reason is that the Dodgers have been slow starters in this series. In this series with the Phillies, they do not have a run scored in any of the first five innings of either game. Let’s count on them coming out of the gates slow yet again.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 8: No (-115)
