MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 5
New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 4:08 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – FS1
The Yankees get first hacks on Sunday, and while that would once worry me, it doesn’t at the moment. In four playoff games this year, they have managed just ten total runs. Their offense looked anemic on Saturday with just six hits and two walks. They loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth and didn’t manage a single hit in that time. For those reasons, I trust that the rookie, Trey Yesavage, can get it done. Sure, the 22-year old has only appeared in three games in his short career, but the big strikeout stuff should play up and keep the Yankees on their heels.
Although the Blue Jays were a little better with the bats to kick off the weekend, they still started slow. Going into the 7th inning, they were up just 2-1 on Luis Gil and company. Now they get a tougher task with Max Fried on the bump. The Yankees lefty has been unstoppable leading up to and into October. His last three starts have seen him go 20.1 innings and allow just one run. He’s also struck out 26 in that span and will likely rack them up again here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 5: No (-115)
Detroit Tigers vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 8:03 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – FS1
This game features a pair of offenses who looked like they had no interest in scoring to start the series. Detroit started a reliever in game one and the Mariners were blanked for the first three innings. They put up six hits in the game, but only two players collected them – three for each Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez. Meanwhile, the Tigers were quiet for the first four innings and only had seven hits over 11 innings.
The tough part for each of these teams is that the pitching matchups don’t get easier after Game 1. Instead of reliever Troy Melton, the Mariners are now facing Tarik Skubal – last year’s AL Cy Young winner and possibly this year’s as well. The Tigers have to try to stuggle some runs against Luis Castillo, who hasn’t allowed more than one run in a game since September 1st. All of that tells me this should be another offensive power outage.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 5: No (-180)
