At first, we didn’t know if there were going to be any games to look at for the first inning action on Thursday. Then we watched the first three series get pushed to a Game 3 on Wednesday with the fourth series still pending at the time of publishing. That should still give us plenty to check out for our NRFI bets for October 2.
With still plenty to be decided early in these playoffs, we’re hitting you with winning NRFI and YRFI props for October 2. Come check out what we have cooked up for this slate of games.

MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 2
Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Guardians
First Pitch – TBD
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – ESPN
In this series, I think I would pick an NRFI even if they threw a pitching machine out there to throw to both teams. Although it didn’t cash on Wednesday because of a George Valera solo shot, the Guardians then didn’t score again for seven more innings. The Tigers, meanwhile scored just one run in the entire game on Wednesday – bringing their series total all the way up to three. These offenses are in the middle of a power outage, and we’re here to pick up the pieces and cash a ticket on it.
It’s not just the bad offenses though. Each of these teams still has a very legitimate arm to toss here in Game 3. First on the bump is Slade Cecconi, who had just one outing against the Tigers this year. In that game he went 6.0 strong with just one earned run. Additionally, he has allowed a first inning run just once since August 10th.
Jack Flaherty is no joke either. While he doesn’t exactly have the season-long numbers you’d want from a guy in a decisive game, he has been good lately. He’s allowed one or less runs in three of his last five games. The last two of those games were against the Guardians and he didn’t allow a first inning run in either of them.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 2: No (TBD)
Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – TBD
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – ESPN
In the Bronx on Thursday, we’re bucking the playoff trend and playing for a first inning run. The pitching matchup is a big reason why I like the YRFI for the first time this postseason. While his season-long ERA is under 3.00, Cam Schlittler was hit around a little more in September. He posted a 3.86 ERA in the month and allowed four first inning runs in the process. Three of those four runs came at home as well.
The Red Sox will send out rookie Connelly Early to pitch the big game in enemy territory. The youngster has only thrown four games in his professional career, and has only allowed five earned runs. However, three of those earned runs have come in the first inning of his starts. With 60% of his runs allowed coming early and playing in a tiny stadium, I like the chances of a first inning score yet again.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 2: Yes (TBD)
