The San Francisco 49ers and their fans breathed a sigh of relief on Sunday as quarterback Brock Purdy returned to action after missing two weeks due to injuries. Purdy threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns in the team’s 26-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, don’t be so quick to slot him in for action in Week 5.
The 25-year-old experienced no issues with his injured toe in the Jacksonville game. However, the pain started setting in after the game, and he’s been a non-participant in the past two days of practice. This wouldn’t be cause for concern during a normal week; however, this isn’t a normal week – the 49ers have a Thursday night date with the Los Angeles Rams.
“Honestly, Thursday night football games, they come quick, so anything can happen,” Purdy told reporters today. “But I’m still hopeful that I can (play). We’ll see. If I can play this game, I want to play. Obviously, I want to get right and get healthy and everything, but we need to win this game against the Rams. So that’s how I’m looking at it.”
“I sort of expected [soreness],” Purdy continued. “But quick turnaround, Thursday night game, and everything, it’s tougher. You don’t have as many days to get right, heal up, and feel better. That’s just where we’re at.”
If Purdy isn’t able to go, backup Mac Jones will get the nod. And whoever is taking the snaps, they’ll have to deal with a depleted offensive core, with key pieces expected to miss the game.
Degenerate Spin: Purdy fantasy owners are not happy right now. Grab Jones as an insurance policy. As for the betting market, the home squad, the Rams, is a 6.5-point favorite on the board. My handicapping has this game as Los Angeles -6, but that’s with Purdy playing.
