MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 30
Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 6:00 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV
This game features the two teams that were best in the majors this year at scoring in the first inning. However, despite that fact, I still like the NRFI here because of the pitching matchup. Everyone knows that pitching is what plays in October – or the day before it rather – and I think that these two aces are going to find a way to get us three quick outs each.
The first of those aces on the hill is Max Fried. He closed the season with a 2.86 ERA and had more wins than any pitcher in baseball. The Yankees haven’t lost a game that he’s started since the middle of August, which was against the Red Sox. Even in that game, Fried went 6.0 innings and didn’t allow a run. There was more of the same down the stretch for him. He closed the season with 14.0 straight scoreless innings in which he struck out 20.
The Yankees have no walk in the park in terms of the pitching matchup either. Garrett Crochet is getting the ball along with his 2.59 ERA. He led the majors in strikeouts this year with 255 of them. Last time he faced the Yankees not only did he give us a scoreless first three innings, but he also struck out 12 bombers. I see more of that in the future and it should help us cash this here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 30: No (-140)
Cincinnati Reds vs. Los Angeles Dodgers
First Pitch – 9:00 pm EST
Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV
Blake Snell gets the ball first for the Dodgers. He quietly posted another stellar ERA for the year (2.35) and was even better at the end of the year. In his last three starts, he threw 19.0 innings and allowed just one earned run. Furthermore, he struck out 28 in that stretch. Now, he’ll have the pleasure of facing the Reds, who just snuck into the playoffs. They didn’t hit particularly well with the season on the line and were roughly league average all year. Snell shouldn’t struggle to get us through the first.
The Reds get Hunter Greene toeing the rubber to try to close this NRFI out for us. He, like all the pitchers we talked about today, has been outstanding this year. He posted a 2.76 ERA and is just two games removed from a complete game shutout against the playoff-bound Chicago Cubs. When he faced the Dodgers earlier this year, he made it through the first two innings unscathed. I like his chances to do that again here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 30: No (-155)
