MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 28
Chicago White Sox vs. Washington Nationals
First Pitch – 3:05 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
We kick off the final day of the season with the White Sox at the dish. They continue to be one of the very worst hitting teams in the league. They rank 27th in run scoring and are one of just five teams that have yet to crack the 4.00 runs per game mark. They’ll have to face Brad Lord, who has been really solid for the Nationals over the last month. In September, he has posted a 3.13 ERA with 30 strikeouts in just 23.0 innings. He’s also doing better at keeping the ball in the park, which should give us what we need here to start the NRFI.
The bottom of the inning will rely on Shane Smith, who closes the season out for the White Sox. He’s held seven of his last ten opponents to just two runs or less. He’s also coming off of one of his better outings of the year. He went 5.0 innings against the Yankees and allowed just one run with eight strikeouts. It’ll be easier to do that against Washington, who ranks 19 spots lower in terms of offense than the Yankees.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 28: No (-115)
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 3:15 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – MLB TV
First to the mound in this one is Charlie Morton – making his retirement start. It’s the team he won the World Series with in 2021 picking him up for one more go-round against the team he spent the bulk of his career with. He might only go roughly one inning or so, but I’d like to think he’s going to ride off on a good one. Facing the worst scoring team in the majors certainly will help. And if they pull him before the first inning is over, then we get Chris Sale to button things up.
The bottom of the first features the Braves. They couldn’t get much of anything going against Bubba Chandler on Saturday. Outside of Drake Baldwin, they had just one hit in the first 5.2 innings. They closed the game with just a single run. Now they get Johan Oviedo, who has allowed more than two runs just once over eight starts this year. He should be able to keep them quiet for three outs so we can cash one last first inning play before the playoffs start.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 28: No (-135)
