MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 25

Houston Astros vs. Athletics

First Pitch – 3:35 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kicking off the NRFI for Thursday is the Astros. They’ve been particularly bad at the plate this year despite all their success. They rank 23rd in the majors in terms of runs scored and rank even lower when it comes to the first inning. They rank 27th in the majors in first inning runs per game. Things won’t be much easier with J.T. Ginn on the bump. He has been great in the month of September. In three starts, he’s allowed just three earned runs – putting up a 1.76 ERA in the process. Each of the teams have been better or right at the level of the Astros, so I expect more of the same.

The Athletics have been quite a bit better than the Astros at the plate. However, they are not exactly closing the season on a high note. In the last three games, they’ve put just just five total runs (or 1.67 per game). It’s a touch better if you go back to five games, where they’ve scored 14 runs, but even that is just 2.80 per game. Framber Valdez should extend that misery. He’s rocking a 3.75 ERA on the year and should have no issues with this lineup.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 25: No (TBD)

Chicago White Sox vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

The White Sox have first ups in this one and they’re another team not lighting the world on fire with their bats. They are one of just four teams in the majors who are averaging less than 4.00 runs per game. They’ve continued that bad look lately with just 12 runs in their last five games (2.4 runs per game). Carlos Rodon won’t make that easier on them. He has a 3.04 ERA and hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a game since August 1st.

In the bottom of the inning, we do run the risk of playing an NRFI against the Yankees. They have been hitting the ball well all season and are hot down the stretch. Still, I’m willing to put my trust in Davis Martin, who has been solid for the White Sox all season. He hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in a game since August 5th. He’s coming off back-to-back clean first innings, and I think he extends it to three here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 25: No (-115)
