MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 20
Athletics vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
PNC Park – Pittsburgh, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The first team to the dish on Saturday will be the Athletics. Although they have been surprisingly good hitting this year, they haven’t been all that potent lately. They’ve put up just 15 runs in their last four games (just 3.75 per game). Now they’ll face the Pirates newest pitching penom, Bubba Chandler. Although he got roughed up a bit by the Brewers recently, he’s otherwise been very good on the season. In his four other appearances this year, he’s thrown 18.0 innings and allowed just four earned runs – which comes out to a 2.00 ERA. All we’re looking for is three outs here, and I feel like he can find that.
In the bottom of the first, we get a team who is hitting much worse. The Pirates are riding a five-game losing streak and have scored just 11 runs in that span. That 2.2 runs per game in that stretch is the worst in the league. That’s not a surprise being that they also have the worst run scoring over the full season as well. They are one of just four teams with less than 4.00 runs per game on the year. Now they get Luis Morales on the bump, who is sporting a 3.08 ERA. He should not have any issues giving us another clean frame.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 20: No (-130)
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
While Toronto has been a force this year, they ahven’t been great in the first inning. They rank 20th in the league in scoring in the first inning, which should open up a solid NRFI opportunity for us here. Additionally, they’ll be squaring off with Noah Cameron, who has been a revelation for the Royals. He’s sporting a 2.98 ERA on the year and has allowed more than three earned runs in just one start over his last seven. As long as he keeps the ball in the park early, the top of the first should be taken care of.
The Royals join the Pirates as one of the four teams that have not cracked 4.00 runs per game this year. Their offense has been pretty poor at times – even if they did put up a 20-spot on Friday. It’ll be harder to spark that offense with Shane Bieber on the mound. He has thrown five times this year and kept his opponent to three runs or fewer in four of them. He’s also posted a blank first inning in three of his last four. With the way the Royals have hit this season, he should handle them here too.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 20: No (-115)
