MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 12

Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV

Baltimore has first ups in our first NRFI action of the day and we love seeing their bats in these situations. Sure, the Orioles are on a roll – they actually have the best record since the calendar turned to September. However, despite that fact, they are just not scoring runs. With a 4-1 record in their last five games, they still have only scored 14 runs in that span (or 2.8 runs per game). Furthermore, they rank 26th in the majors in first inning scoring. Now they’ll try to buck that trend with Chris Bassitt toeing the rubber. He’s got four straight games without allowing more than two earned runs in a start.

The bottom of the inning is definitely more of a sweat. The Blue Jays are a much better hitting team this year, but they still struggle in the first inning. Despite being a top ten offense this year, they still rank 19th in first inning scoring. As a result, we can trust someone like Trevor Rogers to get us a few quick outs. The last time he allowed more than two runs in a start was all the way back on June 18th. We’ll ride that current streak to cash this empty first frame here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 12: No (-125)

Texas Rangers vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Rangers are another team who we don’t really have to worry about in the opening frame. They rank 25th in first inning scoring and have scored just 20 runs in the last five games (4.00 per game). The wild thing is that they have posted a 4-1 record in that span even without their offense really clicking. It might be hard for them to get more action going in this one with rookie Jonah Tong on the bump. While he’s just two starts into his pro career, he’s looked good and has never given up a first inning run.

The bottom of the inning sees Jacob deGrom get the chance to cash this one for us. Over his last four starts, he’s allowed just five total earned runs. That comes out to a 2.21 ERA in that span. He’s also kept six of the last seven first innings scoreless, which bodes well for him in this one. The Mets, meanwhile, enter this one on a six-game losing streak. In that run they have scored just 16 total runs (or 2.67 runs per game). Expect deGrom to keep them quiet for at least three outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 12: No (-135)
