MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 28

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Milwaukee Brewers

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, WI
Broadcast – MLB TV

Arizona is a tough team to deal with when it comes to NRFI spots. They rank in the top five in runs scored and come in at 7th in MLB when it comes to scoring in the first inning. However, we’re going to put our faith in Jose Quintana to get us through the first three outs unscathed. He enters action Thursday with a 3.32 ERA and has been even better as of late. In his last three starts, he’s allowed just four total earned runs. That comes out to a 2.04 ERA in that span. I like his chances of keeping that going, at the very least for one inning.

You might think that these two teams have equal standing when it comes to their offensive prowess. While the Brewers do score plenty of runs, their early scoring has been terrible. They rank 28th in the majors in first inning scoring, just ahead of the Rockies and Cardinals. That should help out the Diamondbacks’ starter Nabil Crismatt – not that he needs it. In his two appearances, the former reliever has allowed just one earned run. That’s over 9.0 innings pitching, yielding exactly a 1.00 ERA. The Brewers might disrupt that, but I don’t believe it’ll be early in the game.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 28: No (-120)

Chicago Cubs vs. San Francisco Giants

First Pitch – 3:45 pm EST
Oracle Park – San Francisco, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Cubs are a slightly above average team when it comes to scoring early in the game. However, they’ll be up against Logan Webb on Thursday. He’s rocking a 3.13 ERA on the season and is coming off two of his better outings of the season. Last time out, he threw 6.0 innings against the Brewers and only allowed one earned run. The time prior he threw 7.0 scoreless against Tampa Bay. He’s allowed one or less runs in four of his last five games, so if anyone is going to keep the Cubs quiet, it may just be him.

On the other side of things, we have another team that has been struggling in the first inning. The Giants rank 25th in the majors in first inning runs, and they haven’t scored one in some time. Now they’ll try to buck the trend with Shota Imanaga toeing the rubber. He’s allowed three or less runs in five straight games. His ERA in the month of August comes out to 2.33. We’ve also seen an uptick in the number of strikouts for him lately. That should help carry us to a clean first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 28: No (-150)
