MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 24
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
We played this one on Saturday and we’re ready to double down with the action on Sunday. The reasons are still largely the same. While the Blue Jays have been one of the better hitting teams this year, they really can’t score in the first inning. They rank 27th in first inning scoring and are barely hanging on to that spot. Now they’ll have to face Eury Perez, who is coming off of a really nice start against the Cardinals. He went 4.1 innings and struck out six. He allowed just one run in that starts. Keeping the Blue Jays quiet for one frame should be easy enough for him.
The bottom of the inning relies on the Marlins sub-par bats and Kevin Gausman. The Marlins are in the bottom half of the league in nearly every metric that would lead to first inning success. They aren’t scoring early or much at all. They also aren’t hitting a lot of homers either. Now they’ll have to try to change that tune against Gausman, who enters Sunday’s action with a 3.78 ERA. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start in three weeks. The Marlins don’t seem like the team that is going to disrupt that.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 24: No (TBD)
Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox
First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV
The top of the first is likely where we’ll feel the sweat in this one. Minnesota is a much better hitting team and they’re facing a pitcher with two career starts. With that being said, the Twins are still far from a good hitting team. They rank in the bottom third of the league in run scoring and runs in the first inning. On top of that, I actually have faith in Yoendrys Gomez. Sure, he’s green, but in his two starts so far, he made it through the entire Braves and Tigers lineups once before giving up any action. He has a 3.60 ERA as a starter and should be able to get us three quick outs.
The bottom of the inning should be a breeze in comparison. The White Sox are one of five teams in the majors that are not averaging at least 4.00 runs per game at this point in the season. Joe Ryan won help matters. His 2.77 ERA has him ranked in the top ten in the majors right now. He’s been even better in August, where he’s posted a 2.49 ERA. He hasn’t faced the White Sox, but beat them all three times he did last year. I expect another stellar showing from him here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 24: No (TBD)
