Underdog Fantasy – DFS Picks for August 22
Zebby Matthews – Higher than 5.5 Strikeouts
Even if we just look at the recent games, six is child’s play for Zebby Matthews. He has hit that number in each of his last three games and in four of his last five. In those last three games, he did so without getting all that deep into games – which is usually the case when you have to pitch to the Yankees and the Tigers (twice). Still, his 14.11 strikeouts per nine in that stretch helped him keep his head above water with strikeout projections. Now he gets a squad in the White Sox that looked futile at the plate against a rookie on Wednesday. He should go deep and rack up plenty of swing and miss.
Joey Wentz – Higher than 4.5 Strikeouts
Joey Wentz is another youngster who I like the strikeout projection on. He’s hit this mark in three of his last five games, and only missed it against a pair of teams that rank in the top eight of limiting stikeouts (the Marlins and the Brewers). Now he gets a Mets team that has struggled against the Braves and managed to strike out 11 times against a slew of Nationals pitchers on Thursday.
Luis Morales – Higher than 4.5 Strikeouts
Luis Morales has just two starts in his MLB career. He’s put up four and five strikeouts, respectively, in those two contests. However, the one where he came up a bit short, it was clear the Athletics didn’t think of him as a starter. He had thrown 2.2 scoreless and only 57 pitches when he got the axe. They let him go deeper in his next start, but still not to a full starter workload. I expect them to trust him a bit more in this one. Plus, he gets a Mariners team that can’t stop striking out. They fanned 17 times last game and have a three game average of 15.33.
