MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 20
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Miami Marlins
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
loanDepot park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
Kicking off our NRFI efforts on Wednesday is the Cardinals’ lineup. They’ve been just below league average when it comes to scoring runs – currently ranked 17th in the majors. However, despite being respectable in that category, they are terrible in the first inning. Their 0.31 first inning runs per game put them dead last. Additionally, the space between them and the next best team is the same gapo between the teams ranked 21st and 29th. That futility will be meet with Sandy Alcantara. While he hasn’t been great this year, he has begun to settle in late. He has held three of his last five opponents to one run or fewer and is fresh off a solid start against the Red Sox.
The Marlins are next to the plate. Although their hot streak was the talk of baseball for a bit, they have settled back into being a mediocre team. They are below average in scoring and first inning scoring, and have been playing below their averages lately. In their last five games, they’ve scored just 18 runs (3.6 runs per game). Andre Pallante is another pitcher without the metrics you might want. However, some of that is running into the Yankees and the Cubs in his last two games. Still, he’s keep his opponents scoreless in 67% of his recent starts and I like his chances to do so against the Marlins.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 20: No (-115)
New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Mets were supposed to be a feared offense this year, but they wound up pretty middling. They rank 13th in run scoring and are a spot worse at scoring in the first inning. And even though they have put up some runs recently, I’m putting my faith in Brad Lord. He enters action Wednesday with a 3.26 ERA. He’s been better than that since moving to being a full-time starter for the Nationals too. In those five starts, he’s posted a 2.76 ERA and has only allowed two home runs. He should be able to keep the Mets in the park and get this NRFI started right.
In the bottom of the inning, it’s all about Kodai Senga. Since returning to action from injury, Senga hasn’t been as good as he was prior. Still, he’s gone back to back games of allowed two or less runs and posting under a 3.00 ERA. His seven strikeouts last time out were certainly a good sign of things to come as well. Now he’ll get a Nationals team that ranks in the bottom third of the league in run scoring. Get the ghost fork going and let’s eat on the NRFI play.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 20: No (-110)
