MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 19
Seattle Mariners vs. Philadelphia Phillies
First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Mariners get the first hacks to kick off this NRFI. They haven’t been solid at the plate as of late – scoring just 11 runs in their last three games. That’s nearly a whole run lower than their season average. Things won’t be much easier for them with Cristopher Sanchez on the bump. He’s and his 2.45 ERA are currently second in odds for the NL Cy Young. The wild thing is that he’s been even better lately. In his last three games, he’s allowed just four runs, which comes out to a 1.80 ERA. If someone is going to turn that around, it won’t be this Seattle lineup.
To close out the NRFI, we’re leaning on an arm that has not been nearly as good. Bryce Miller returns from his elbow issue and his three rehab starts in triple-A. His stirkeout stuff appear to be on point down there, which is going to be a big help against these Phillies. They have a lot of swing and miss at the top of their order. While the Phillies are a solid hitting team, I think that Miller can get those first three outs for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 19: No (-115)
Texas Rangers vs. Kansas City Royals
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast – MLB TV
We played this series on Monday and it was one of our misses. However, we’re doubling down on our efforts here and it’s because of how bad the offenses are. The Rangers rank 24th in the majors in run scoring, and the Royals are one of the few teams worse than them (27th). They also both rank in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning.
It’s not just the bad bats that have us liking the NRFI here. The Royals will send out Seth Lugo. He’s been shelled in two straight games, but is still in the top 30 of ERA in the majors. He’s held nine of his last 13 opponents to two or less runs.
Additionally, the Rangers will send out Merrill Kelly. Kelly has a 3.36 ERA on the year and has been even better lately. He’s held six of his last seven opponents to two runs or fewer. His ERA in that run has been a meager 2.88, which gives me the faith that he can cash this for us.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 19: No (-120)
