MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 12

Miami Marlins vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Marlins get first hacks in this one on Tuesday and they haven’t been scoring all that many runs lately. They closed out the series with the Braves with a double header on Saturday and a series ender on Sunday. In those three games, they managed just eight total runs (or 2.67 per game). With most of the Braves pitching staff on the IL, that’s a brutal run. Seeing Logan Allen on the bump isn’t going to offer a reprieve from those struggles. He has settled into the season nicely. Since the calendar turned to July, he’s posted just a 3.28 ERA and has allowed more than three runs just once in that span. He’s coming off an outing where he held the Mets to just one run, so this should be a breeze for him.

The Guardians aren’t too hot when it comes to scoring runs either. They rank 26th in MLB with just 3.98 runs per game. That puts them as one of five teams that are under four runs per game on the year. They also rank in the bottom third of the league in terms of first inning scoring. Now they’ll get one of my favorite sneaky good starters – Janson Junk. Junk has had some issues in his last couple games, but he’s coming off a July where he maintained a 2.79 ERA. He should be able to find three quick ones against a struggling Guardians lineup.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 12: No (-115)

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, WI
Broadcast – MLB TV

Okay, so this game is the obvious play for NRFI today, but I still think the value is there. We are literally looking at what might be the best two pitchers in this division (sorry Andrew Abbott).

The first of those guys will be Freddy Peralta. He currently is top 10 in terms of Cy Young odds in the National League and for good reason. He has just a 3.03 ERA and has struck out 141 guys in just 130.2 innings. More importantly, for our purposes, he should have a cake walk to three outs for us. The Pirates rank dead last in scoring and first inning scoring – I’d probably take a pitching machine for an NRFI against them.

The odds-on favorite for the NL Cy Young takes the bump in the bottom of the inning. You can currently get Paul Skenes hovering around -500 to get the hardware this year. He will have to work a little harder than his counterpart being that the Brewers have scored seven runs in three straight games. However, it’s worth noting that even though the Brew Crew are a top five offense, they do rank 23rd in first inning scoring. That should help Skenes find his feet early.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 12: No (-185)
