MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 11

Minnesota Twins vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 7:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Twins lead off this one and they haven’t exactly been a hot hitting team. They rank in the bottom third of the league in runs per game. Not only that, but they also rank in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring. They’ll face Will Warren in this one, who might not have the surface numbers that will inspire confidence, but he’s been stellar lately. In his last three games, he’s only allowed only three total runs, which comes out to a 1.62 ERA in that span. Not only that, but he did it against far better hitting teams than the Twins – the Phillies, Rangers and Rays.

In the bottom of the inning, we have another pitcher that folks aren’t exactly lining up to back. Zebby Matthews also has some ugly numbers on the season, but he has also looked good as of late. He’s coming off an outing where he allowed just one run over 5.0 innings against the Tigers. That was his third start in his last five where he’s allowed a run or less. It’ll give him a little help that the Yankees are icy cold. They have scored just 12 total runs over their last five games (or 2.4 runs per game).

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 11: No (-110)

Boston Red Sox vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Petco Park – San Diego, CA
Broadcast – MLB TV

We cashed on the Red Sox on Sunday and we’re looking for an NRFI from them here. They’ve been one of the very best scoring team in the majors, but their scoring often comes in bunches. They scored just six runs in the last two games of the series with the Padres, and that’s after scoring ten in game one alone. They’ll face Cristian Javier, fresh off the IL, in his first start of the year. He had a 3.89 ERA in limited action in 2024. He had five rehab starts prior and showed some big strikeout stuff, which I’m hoping gets us through the first.

The bottom of the inning will be virtually no worry at all. Garrett Crochet is on the bump looking to add to his Cy Young resume. His ERA sits at 2.24, but somehow he’s been better over his last four starts. In that span, he’s posted a 1.61 ERA and has been mw9ing batters over. The Astros are the perfect team to get off on the right foot against. Despite some relative success, they rank 29th in the majors in scoring in the first inning – just ahead of the Pirates. Crochet’s first three outs should be a walk in the park.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 11: No (-155)
