MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 3

Kansas City Royals vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 1:37 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV

We rode this matchup to an NRFI win on Saturday, and we’re going to double for Sunday’s action. The reason we like it doesn’t really change here. The Royals hit first in this one and they continue to be one of the very worst hitting teams in the league. They rank in the bottom third of the league in terms of first inning run scoring and are 29th in the league in scoring overall. Now they’ll look to buck that trend against Chris Bassitt. Bassitt got roughed up by the Orioles in his last game, but had a great July prior to that. He had posted a 2.42 ERA in the month prior and I like him to return to that version of himself here.

The bottom of the inning shouldn’t be much of a sweat either with Seth Lugo on the bump. He comes into Sunday’s action with a 3.03 ERA on the year. He hasn’t taken a loss for his squad since May and hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start since then either. Now he’ll face the Blue Jays. While they have been a tough team to beat, it hasn’t been because of their first inning performance. They actually score less runs in the first inning than the Royals do – placing 23rd in first inning runs per game with 0.41 per game.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 3: No (-135)

Detroit Tigers vs. Philadelphia Phillies

First Pitch – 7:00 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – ESPN

The Sunday night game between a pair of playoff-bound teams is an odd one to take for an NRFI. However, despite how good the teams are and how adept their offenses have been, I like the pitching matchup in this one.

The Tigers get their hacks first in this one and face lefty Cristopher Sanchez. He enters action with a 2.55 ERA and he’s looked even better than that lately. He’s held six of his last seven opponents to just one run, which gave him a 1.95 ERA in the month of July. If anyone can keep this Tigers lineup quiet for an inning, Sanchez is a safe bet.

The bottom of the inning sees a new face in Detroit. Charlie Morton makes his Tigers debut in a big spot for the club. His 5.42 ERA is probably going to make plenty of people nervous when they are placing an NRFI. However, he has been sensational in the first inning and has been much better overall lately. In his last eight starts, he’s only given up a first inning run one time. I think he should be able to get us through a clean first frame.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 3: No (-120)
