MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 26
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Cincinnati Reds
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Great American Ballpark – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV
Tampa Bay is one of those teams that has a lot better stats throughout the game than they do in the first inning. While they are a top 10 team in the league in runs scored, they fall into the middle of the pack when it comes to first inning scoring. Additionally, they didn’t really fly out of the gate in game one against the Reds – putting up just two runs on six hits. Saturday’s task won’t be any easier with Andrew Abbott on the bump. The All-Star lefty is sporting a 2.13 ERA on the year and has impressively only allowed one homer in July. He only needs to get us three quick outs here and I can’t see him having trouble with that.
The Reds have actually been the best team in the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. However, they have fallen on tough times as of late. They haven’t scored in the first inning in any of their last four games and haven’t had much offense to show at all in those games easier. Now they’ll try to reverse that trend with Ryan Pepiot on the hill. He has a respectable 3.59 ERA and has found himself in the top 25 of strikeouts in the major leagues this year. That should help him against a Reds squad, who fans quite a bit as is. He should be able to ride that to a quiet first inning.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 25: No (-115)
Miami Marlins vs. Milwaukee Brewers
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, WI
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Marlins get first hacks in this one and Jose Quintana will be tasked with keeping out NRFI in tact. He’s been serviceable for the Brewers this year with a 3.49 ERA as he continues to induce a lot of groundballs. Helping him out here will be the fact that the Marlins are not that great of a lineup. While they had their run recently, they still rank 18th in both runs and first inning runs. Additionally, over their last four games, they’ve only managed to put up 13 runs (or 3.25 per game). Quintana should be able to give us a clean first frame against them here. ‘
To close out this NRFI is one of my favorite under-the-radar pitchers. Janson Junk has been way better than expected for the Marlins. The 29-year old righty has hit double digit appearances for just the first time in his career. He’s rewarded Miami with a 3.09 ERA and plenty of great starts. Over his last three starts, he’s only allowed four earned runs. While Milwaukee is hardly a break right now, they haven’t been good in the first inning. They rank in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring, which should help Junk (and us) here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 26: No (-125)
