MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 20

San Diego Padres vs. Washington Nationals

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Nationals Park – Washington, DC
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Padres get first hacks on Sunday afternoon in the nation’s capital. San Diego has been a below average team in the first inning, scoring just 0.47 first inning runs per game. They also haven’t score in the first inning in three straight. They’ll run into a tough arm with MacKenzie Gore on the bump. He carries a 3.02 ERA into action on Sunday and he’s been even better lately. In his last three starts before the All-Star break, he threw 17.1 innings and allowed just four earned runs. That comes out to a 2.08 ERA in that span. If the Padres are going to get that monkey off their back, it isn’t going to be against Gore.

The Nationals have not been a good hitting team this year and especially as of late. They’ve put up just 15 total runs in their last five games (3.0 runs per game). Now they’ll have to navigate scoring on Nick Pivetta, who has been outstanding. He has just a 2.88 ERA on the year and is top 15 in the league when it comes to strikeouts. Additionally, he’s been even better in the last couple. In his last four starts (25.1 innings), he’s only allowed one earned run. I doubt that Washington is the team to change that trend.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 20: No (TBD)

Kansas City Royals vs. Miami MArlins

First Pitch – 1:40 pm EST
loanDepot Park – Miami, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV

Kansas City and their disappointing offense will come to the plate first in this one. They just can’t seem to figure out how to score with any regularity. They rank 29th in the majors in run scoring with just 3.47 runs per game – only ahead of the Pirates. That’s good news for Marlins starter, Janson Junk. He’s been excellent as of late. In fact, he hasn’t allowed a run in the last 15.0 innings that he’s thrown. That includes back-to-back scoreless outings against the Reds and Orioles. With the Royals struggling, he should be able to get us a quick three outs.

In the bottom of the inning, the Marlins are quite a bit better in hitting. However, the Royals have a slew of arms ready to silence them. Perhaps the most impressive this year has been Kris Bubic, who gets the start on Sunday. He has a 2.48 ERA and 113 strikeouts in just 108.2 innings. He gave up a few runs in the All-Star Game, but I expect him to settle in and get us a clean first frame here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 20: No (TBD)
