Promotions all over the world as well as domestic ones are showing up in sportsbooks. The advantage here is that the data is usually quite a bit less sharp than when you’re making MMA predictions for the UFC. So we’ve decided to dig into some each week to get you started on your regional MMA journey. This week we head to overseas for PFL Africa 1 from Cape Town, South Africa for our regional MMA pick.

MMA Regional Pick of the Week: PFL AFrica 1
PFL Africa Heavyweight Fight: Corey Anderson vs Denis Goltsov
Card Start Time: Saturday (7/19), 2:00pm EST (ESPN+)
PFL starts up their regional African promotion this weekend from Cape Town, South Africa. The prelims will see the beginning of their heavyweight and bantamweight tournaments. After those, the main card gets kicking with some PFL veterans looking to pick up big wins.
The spot I’m most interested in this week is the main card opener between Denis Goltsov and Corey Anderson. Goltsov is fresh off having won the PFL heavyweight tournament with a submission win over Oleg Popov. He’s proven to be equally dangerous on the feet and the ground.
Facing off against him is Corey Anderson. Anderson comes up to heavyweight for the first time in a dozen years and the first time in a major promotion. Part of the reasoning, no doubt, is his explicit displeasure with PFL not giving him enough fights. He seems to be trying to fight out his contract as quick as possible, which leaves him to take fights that may not be in his best interest.
I think this is one of those fights that is not right for Anderson. He often relies on being able to revert to his wrestling in bad situations, but the size disparity and skills of Goltsov likely won’t allow that. I also think he’ll struggle on the feet with the power. As a result, we’re getting great value on the Goltsov moneyline here.
