MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 13

Chicago Cubs vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 1:35 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

The early game on Sunday sees a couple of teams that can really hit the ball. However, I love the pitching matchup enough to love the NRFI for this one.

In the top half of the inning, the arm we’ll see is Will Warren. In his last six starts, he’s managed to keep his opponents to three or less runs in five of them. Additionally, he’s kept his opponents scoreless in two of his last three games and in half of the last six games. What should make matters even easier for Warren is how bad the Cubs have been with the bats in this series. They have scored just five runs over the first two games against the Yankees.

There’s a couple reasons why I trust the Cubs in the bottom of the inning to get us the NRFI. The first of those reasons is that, down the stretch, the Yankees just haven’t been the offense that the stats have shown. The other reason is that we get a great arm here for Chicago. Shota Imanaga comes into Sunday’s game with a 2.80 ERA. Not only that, but he’s been even better over his last five games. In that span (27.0 innings), he’s allowed just seven earned runs. That comes out to a 2.33 ERA in the last month. As a result, I feel like we can trust him to get us three quick outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 13: No (+105)

Texas Rangers vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

In our second NRFI action, we get some offenses that are less scary than the first option. The top of the first features the Rangers, who rank 24th in the majors in terms of runs score with 4.04 runs per game. I can’t imagine that it’ll be easier when they face Hunter Brown and his 2.21 ERA. Not only is he limiting runs, but he is also sitting down batters at a crazy rate. He ranks in the top ten in MLB for strikeouts with 129 in 110.0 innings. The Rangers might turn around their fate yet, but not against Brown.

The bottom of the first is more of the same in this one. Houston has been terrible in the first inning this year. Over the course of the year, they rank 27th in terms of first inning scoring with 0.36 first inning runs per game. If they’re going to turn that around, it isn’t going to be against Nathan Eovaldi. He has a 1.62 ERA on the year and has only allowed four earned runs in his last five starts. It’s been 11 straight innings without a run allowed and I hardly believe it’ll be this Astros lineup that disrupts that.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 13: No (-165)
