MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – July 12

Seattle Mariners vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

One of our NRFI selections for the day comes to us in the afternoon. Saturday has plenty of afternoon baseball and this one is a shaping up to be a serious pitcher’s duel.

First to the bump in this one is Casey Mize. He’s been sharp for the Tigers this year, coming into Saturday’s action with a 2.63 ERA. The last month or so has been expecially dominant for him as well. In the last six starts – dating back to the beginning of June – Mize has not allowed more than two runs in any start. Now he’ll be tasked with limiting this Mariners offense, who has been good. However, they haven’t scored in the first inning over the last six games. Mize should be able to keep that trend in tact.

On the surface, the bottom half of the first might look like a big sweat. The Tigers are good hitting team and the season stats for Georgy Kirby aren’t exactly much to write home about. However, when you look at the recent trends for each of those, we’ve seen a change in fortune. The Tigers have only scored 10 runs over their last three games, which puts them down near the bottom of the league. Meanwhile, in Kirby’s last three starts (18.1 innings), he’s only allowed two total runs. That comes out to a 0.98 ERA in that span and should be enough to get us three quick outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 12: No (-150)

Miami Marlins vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 4:05 pm EST
Canden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – MLB TV

This game features a pair of starters who have been shoving as well, but maybe are a bit less heralded. Trevor Rogers is the first to toe the rubber in this one. He’s rocking a 1.57 ERA on the year. In five starts, he’s had three different games where he’s thrown 6.0 or more innings and kept his opponents scoreless. Now he’ll get Miami, who ranks in the bottom third of the league in terms of scoring in the first inning. They average just 0.45 first inning runs per game. Not only that, but the Marlins have been brutal at the plate lately – scoring just four runs over their last three games.

The Orioles get their hacks in the bottom of the inning, and they’re somehow worse when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They rank 28th in the league at scoring in the opening frames and aren’t any better at home. They’ll face Janson Junk, who sports a 3.12 ERA on the year. He recently moved into a starting role for the Marlins and has tallied four starts. In that span, he’s allowed more than two earned runs just once. He should be able to keep that trend rolling here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for July 12: No (-115)
