MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 27

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, MA
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the first of our two NRFI plays for today, we have a pitching matchup that should get the job done. Brayan Bello toes the rubber first on Friday. He’s been sharp for the Red Sox all year – sporting a 3.31 ERA for his efforts. He’s coming off a pair of excellent starts against the Yankees and Giants. In those games (13.0 innings), he combined to allow just one earned run while striking out 14. The bonus for him here is that the Blue Jays lineup isn’t nearly as good as either of those two. They currently rank 25th in first inning runs per game with just 0.39.

The bottom of the inning gives us another Jose Berrios start. He’ll get to throw against a badly skidding Red Sox squad who has lost five straight games. They’ve only scored a whopping 16 runs in those five (which comes out to 3.2 runs per game in that span). Based on his recent starts, Berrios should be able to keep that trend in tact. He’s been dealing as of late. In four of his last five starts, he’s held opponents to one run or fewer. Three of those starts were scoreless across the whole game for the Blue Jays starter.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 27: No (-125)

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Kansas City Royals

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Kauffman Stadium – Kansas City, MO
Broadcast –MLB TV

I know the Dodgers bats are big and scary, but I still like the chances that they get blanked in the first in this one. Rookie Noah Cameron is on the bump for the Royals. He’s allowed more than two runs in a start just once in his life. To add to things, across eight starts, Cameron has only allowed a first inning run one time. Also, if you’re going to keep the Dodgers quiet early, you’re going to want a pitcher who limits homers. He’s allowed just four over his eight starts, so let’s put our faith in him.

The bottom of the inning is much less of a sweat. Kansas City has an offense that simply shouldn’t scare anybody. They rank 22nd in the league in first inning runs. That’s a regular power surge compared to what we see over the entire game. In that realm, the Royals are dead last with just 3.25 runs per game. They’ll have to shed that against Dustin May, who has been good enough for the Dodgers. I think he breezes through to help us cash this underdog line.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 27: No (+100)
