Well, my three-day winning streak for daily best bets certainly went down in flames Friday night, as my pick, the Tampa Bay Rays, lost 22-8 to the Baltimore Orioles. At least I went out with a bang. Islam Makhachev’s vacated UFC Lightweight Championship is up for grabs in the UFC 317 main event, with undefeated former featherweight champion Ilia Topuria moving up a weight class to challenge former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the belt. And the odds indicate that this is a squash match.
While the line is wide, I do need a winner tomorrow, so I’ll side with Topuria. Pretty much everything is on his side in this matchup. He’s eight years younger than Oliveria and still in his prime. He’s a deadly finisher on the feet and the mat. And the speed, athleticism, and durability are also on his side. The only small question is how he’ll fare against bigger opponents up a weight class. I think he’ll answer that question positively tomorrow night in Las Vegas.
