MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 23

Texas Rangers vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 6:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’re kicking off Monday’s action with an NRFI between a pair of teams that are struggling with the bats. The first of those teams to get their hacks will be the Rangers. They have been brutal at the plate again this year, ranking 26th in the league in runs with 3.62 per game. They’ve been even worse as of late – putting up just 16 in their last five games (or 3.20 per game in that span). Now they’ll face Trevor Rogers, who doesn’t have a long track record for this year, but has been decent. In two starts, he’s put up a 3.12 ERA and struck out nine batters in 8.2 innings. He should be able to keep this faltering Rangers offense at bay for three outs.

Speaking of struggling offenses, Baltimore’s bats rank just barely above the Rangers in terms of runs per game. Their 3.95 puts them in 24th in the league, still well below the league average. On top of that, they too have been worse lately. They’ve put up just 11 runs in their last four games combined, which comes out to a paltry 2.75 per game. They’ll try to right that ship against Patrick Corbin. A year ago, I would give them a great chance at doing just that. However, Corbin has been pretty sharp this year. He enters Monday’s action with a 3.91 ERA and recently held the Royals to a scoreless first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 23: No (+100)

New York Yankees vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Great American Ball Park – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’re breaking our usual NRFI mold and taking a swing on a YRFI on Monday. This just so happens to be a perfect storm for run scoring. Firstly, you have the right environment. The Great American Ballpark has been one of the top five run scoring environments in baseball this year according to park factors. Additionally, it ranks as the best currently for home run hitters this season. Now we’re going to add two teams who know how to score runs to the mix.

Despite a skid recently, the Yankees are still in the top five of run scoring in the majors. They’ll get a chance off Nick Lodolo, who hasn’t been all that sharp as of late. In his last three starts (15.1 innings), he’s allowed 11 earned runs. That’s good for a 6.46 ERA in that span.

It’s a similar story on the other side of the inning. The Reds sit just outside of the top 10 when it comes to run scoring and have been amazing early in the game. They rank first in the majors in first inning runs per game with 0.77. That number goes all the way up to 0.97 per game when they are playing at home. That should be easier with the Yankees throwing a guy with no experience this year. We last saw Allan Winans with the Braves in 2024, where he threw in two games, took the loss in both, and posted a 15.26 ERA in the process.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 23: Yes (-140)
