MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 18
Boston Red Sox vs. Seattle Mariners
First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
T-Mobile Park – Seattle, WA
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Red Sox pitching staff has been lights out as of late. Starting with the three game set with the Yankees and going through the first of these games with the Mariners, Boston had only allowed four total runs in that span. They’ve got the perfect arm to keep that trend in tact as Garrett Crochet takes the hill on Wednesday. He brings a 2.24 ERA to action and is coming off one of his best outings this year. He held the big bats of the Yankees to just one run over 8.1 innings with seven strikeouts. Seattle is just above average in terms of run scoring, but I think they’ll need more than that to get to Crochet early.
While the Red Sox are dealing right now, and have put together a six-game win streak (going into Tuesday’s action), that doesn’t mean their bats have been active. In fact, in the six-game win streak they’ve scored just 17 runs. That comes out to 2.83 runs per game. Without Rafael Devers in the lineup, those runs could be even harder to come by. Then we have the Luis Castillo of it all. He has a 3.29 ERA and has been even better lately as well. Over his last five games, he’s kept a 2.70 ERA and that Red Sox offense should help that get even lower.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 18: No (-140)
Houston Astros vs. Athletics
First Pitch – 10:05 pm EST
Sutter Health Park – Sacramento, Ca
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Astros get first hacks in the nightcap for Wednesday. They rank in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring runs. Things get even worse for them when you just look at the first inning. They rank dead last in the majors in first inning scoring with 0.31 first inning runs per game. That might not be easy to boost up when they face Luis Severino. He’s coming off an outing where he went 7.2 innings and allowed just one run. He should be able to keep this Astros lineup quiet for at least the first three outs.
The bottom of the inning sees another pitcher who is dealing lately. Framber Valdez has allowed just five earned over his last three starts (21.0 innings). More impressively, he’s fanned 32 in that span, which means teams aren’t even really making contact on him. The Athletics have been right around the middle of the pack with their scoring and with the amount of times they strike out. I’d expect they’d need to be better than that to disrupt the run that Valdez is on.
