MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – June 7

Chicago Cubs vs. Detroit Tigers

First Pitch – 1:10 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV

The first of our NRFI selections comes to us from the early game. The Cubs travel to Detroit to take on the Tigers and we’re expecting a blank inning. The Tigers send out reliever Tyler Holton to make the start. He’s served as an opener just once before, but he’s been sharp in all of his recent relief appearances. Over his last ten games, he’s exited without allowing a run nine times. The Cubs rank in the middle of the pack in terms of run scoring in the first inning, so I’m willing to trust Holton to get those first three.

The bottom of the first might be a slightly bigger sweat. The Tigers are a good run scoring offense. However, I like the way Jameson Taillon has been dealing lately. In his last three starts (19.2 innings), he’s allowed just four earned runs. That’s an 1.83 ERA in that stretch and it helped to lower his season ERA under 4.00. While this is a step up in competition for him, I like his chances to at least start the game with a clean frame.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 7: No (-105)

Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 7:35 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – FOX

It’s always tricky to trust an NRFI in a big rivalry game like this one – especially when both treams rank in the top five in runs. However, I really do like the pitching matchup in this one.

The Yankees will send out Ryan Yarbrough first to toe the rubber. He’s been great for them this year. With a 2.83 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 41.1 innings, he’s been putting up empty first innings all year. Since he’s become a starter, he has yet to allow more than two innings in a game. Four of those five starts have seen him hold his opponents to just one run.

In bottom of the inning will get a heavy dose of Garrett Crochet. He’s one of the very best pitchers in the league right now – ranking second in AL Cy Young odds at the moment. He has a 1.98 ERA and is third in the majors in strikeouts with 101. He has 23 strikeouts over his last two starts (13.2 innings). If there is anyone who can quiet this Yankees lineup, it just might be him.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for June 7: No (-125)
