MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 27

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 6:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the first of our NRFI selections for the day, we’ll see the Cardinals get their hacks first. Their hitting has really struggled over the course of this season. They rank 28th in the league in terms of first inning scoring – putting up just 0.33 runs per game in the first frame. That early futility is a sign of good things in this one. Plus, things won’t get any better for them as they face Tomoyuki Sugano on Tuesday. The Baltimore hurler comes in with a 3.07 ERA and having held opponents to two or less runs in four of his last five starts.

The bottom of the inning feels a touch more uncertain given the starter for St. Louis. Andre Pallante doesn’t quite have the numbers that are making you jump to the book for an NRFI. While his surface numbers aren’t great, his first inning numbers are amazing. In ten starts this year, Pallante has allowed a run in only his season debut. His run of nine straight games without allowing a first inning run gives me a lot of confidence in this one. Giving me even more is the fact that the Orioles are bad early as well. They rank in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 27: No (-115)

Atlanta Braves vs. Philadelphia Phillies

First Pitch – 6:45 pm EST
Citizens Bank Park – Philadelphia, PA
Broadcast – TBS

We’re playing with fire a bit in this NRFI effort, but I like the matchups and the price. The play is a scary one because we know Ronald Acuna Jr. is leading off the game. In his three games since he’s been back from injury, he has an extra base hit in all three – with two of them being dingers. However, Ranger Suarez is on the bump and Acuna has historically had trouble with him. He’s hit .214 in 14 at bats with a .599 OPS. Suarez is also coming off one of his best outings of the year, where he held Colorado scoreless for 6.2 innings. Combine that success and we’ve got a solid top of the first.

The bottom of the inning will probably bring some sweat as well. That’s because Spencer Strider has not had as easy of a return from his injuries. The accuracy and some of the speed has just not been there in either of his two starts. While that could cause some concern against the Phillies, he has always had Philadelphia’s number. In eight career starts, he has a 2.06 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 52.1 innings. If he’s a fraction of that pitcher on Tuesday, we should get through the first inning.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 27: No (-130)
