MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 23

Texas Rangers vs. Chicago White Sox

First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
Rate Field – Chicago, IL
Broadcast – MLB TV

We’ll head to the windy city for our first NRFI action of the day. The top of the first sees Sean Burke take the mound for the White Sox. While he got roughed up a bit by the Cubs the last time out, he had been on a roll before that. In the previous three starts (16.1 innings), Burke had allowed just two earned runs. Walks continue to be his only real problem, but that shouldn’t be as much of an issue against the Rangers. They rank 28th in the majors in walks per game. If he can keep them off the bases that way, he should get through the first easily.

In the bottom of the inning, we have a pitcher who is quite a bit more consistent. Tyler Mahle has been outstanding on the season – carrying a 1.47 ERA into action on Friday. He hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his nine starts this year. Now he’ll face a White Sox team that is 29th in the majors in scoring runs. They average just 3.28 per game, which is on its way down with them scoring just 2.33 over their last three.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 23: No (-140)

Kansas City Royals vs. Minnesota Twins

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Target Field – Minneapolis, MN
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Royals will hit first in this one and that’s always a good sign for NRFI bettors. They’re 27th in runs per game and 24th in first inning scoring. If you’er a team like the Royals looking to get going, the last thing you want to see is Pablo Lopez. He has a 2.40 ERA and has been mowing people over this season. In 45.0 innings this year, he has 29 strikeouts. Between the weak bats and the hot pitcher, you have to love how the top of the first looks here.

The bottom of the first should be a bit more of a sweat, but I’m putting my faith behind Noah Cameron. He’s been called upon to make two starts this year and has logged a total of 12.2 innings. Over that span, he’s allowed just one earned run and only three hits. The Twins are in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring first. They are a touch better in the first inning, but are still under league average. As a result, I expect Cameron to roll for a third time.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 23: No (-130)
