MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 15

Minnesota Twins vs. Baltimore Orioles

First Pitch – 12:35 pm EST
Camden Yards – Baltimore, MD
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first in our first NRFI effort sees Tomoyuki Sugano toe the rubber. He’s been great this year as a whole, but even better lately. His 2.72 ERA is enough to trust for the whole year, but he’s also allowed two or less earned runs in four of his last five games. He’s coming off his best outing yet, where he stifled the Angels. He allowed just one earned run over 7.1 innings with no walks. He’ll face a slightly below average offense here in Minnesota. They rank 17th in both runs scored and runs scored in the first inning. As a result, I have all the trust in him to get us started.

The bottom of the first might be a bit more of a sweat. Chris Paddack does not nearly have the surface stats that Sugano does. However, he has looked similar as of late. He has also allowed just two or less earned runs in four of his last five starts. Additionally, the Orioles have been surprisingly poor at the plate. They rank 19th at scoring in the first inning. They’re worse over the whole game with just 3.88 runs per game. Paddack should be able to keep them in check for at least three outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 15: No (-110)

Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

The pitching matchup in our evening selection is even stronger. The B-side of this one is the first one we’ll see, and that just so happens to be legend Jacob deGrom. He carries a 2.72 ERA into Thursday’s action. His strikeout numbers have come back up with 46 in 43.0 innings. helping him out here is just how bad the Astros are in the first inning. They rank dead last in runs per game in the first inning with 0.19 and are even worse on the road. They only score 0.17 first inning runs per game on the road.

Wrapping up our final NRFI is Hunter Brown. Brown has turned himself into an early Cy Young candidate with his April performance. He has a 1.48 ERA with 58 strikeouts in just 48.2 innings. He’s also won six games already in the short season. Texas may not be as futile in the first inning, but their offense has been pretty bad. They rank 26th in runs scored per game with just 3.50 per game. I can’t imagine them changing that narrative on Thursday.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 15: No (-155)
