MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 14
Boston Red Sox vs. Detroit Tigers
First Pitch – 6:40 pm EST
Comerica Park – Detroit, MI
Broadcast – MLB TV
This NRFI features a pair of teams hitting extremely well this season, so the pitching is going to have to do some heavy lifting for us. The first of the pitchers to do that will be Tarik Skubal. He’ll carry a 2.08 ERA into Wednesday’s action, which puts him in the top ten of the league at this stage of the season. He’s also in the top ten when it comes to strikeouts – fanning 60 guys in just 47.2 innings. So even though the Red Sox are swinging some good bats, I think Skubal could blank just about anyone for three outs worth.
The Red Sox will throw a guy with a bit less of a well-known name, but who is also putting up solid numbers. Dobbins has allowed more than two earned runs in just one of his four starts this year and has a 2.78 ERA to show for it. He has 19 strikeouts in that span with just four walks, which makes it easy for him to get out of jams. The Tigers have been up and down with their run scoring over the last couple of weeks – I think Dobbins can give them one of those down games here.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 14: No (-155)
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Toronto Blue Jays
First Pitch – 7:07 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV
The second game that I like on the NRFI for Wednesday takes place north of the border. Unlike the first game, there isn’t much on offense to worry about in this one. The Rays get their hacks first and they rank in the bottom third of the league in both runs scored (25th) and runs scored in the first inning (21st). They’ll face Chris Bassitt, who has fallen off a bit lately, but that’s largely due to letting up multiple home runs in his last three games. Luckily for him, he’ll face the team that ranks 26th in terms of home runs. I think he’ll keep them in the park and off the board for the first.
The bottom of the inning sees Ryan Pepiot toe the rubber. He’s picked things up quite a bit lately. In his last three starts (16.1 innings), he’s allowed just four earned runs. Those games include outings against the Yankees and the Phillies – both formidable offenses. He should have a much easier time with this Blue Jays’ offense that ranks 22nd in both runs and first inning runs. Let’s count on him to close up shop for our second NRFI.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 14: No (-130)
