MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 12

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Mets

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Citi Field – Queens, NY
Broadcast – MLB TV

My favorite NRFI spot on Monday comes to us from Queens. David Peterson toes the rubber first and he’s been pretty great lately. He carries a 3.05 ERA into action against the Pirates and that may not even do his recent starts justice. He’s held each of his last three opponents, and four of his last five, to two runs or fewer. It should be easy for him to keep that going with the way the Pirates are swinging the bats right now. They are tied for 25th in MLB when it comes to scoring in the first inning and even worse over the whole game. They rank dead last in runs overall at 3.08 per game.

Remember when I said the Pirates were tied for 25th in first inning runs per game? Well, you’re looking at the team that’s tied with them – the New York Mets. They’re much better over the course of the game, but they have been slow starters this year. What won’t help that is seeing Paul Skenes standing on the hill. His strikeout numbers might be a little lower than they were projection, but he still has a 2.77 ERA and is mowing teams down left and right.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 12: No (-140)

Kansas City Royals vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

Another NRFI spot I like for Monday’s action is down in Houston. The Royals get the swings first and they’re another team that’s struggling at the plate. They rank 26th in the majors in runs scored and, like the other teams we’ve discussed, have a tough pitching matchup for Monday. Ryan Gusto gets the ball for the Astros – fresh off of lowering his ERA below 3.00. In his last four appearances, he’s allowed just four total earned runs. Runs are already at a premium for the Royals and that shouldn’t change in this one.

The bottom of the inning will be relying on Michael Wacha to finish off the NRFI. He, too, has an ERA under 3.00 thanks to some great starts as of late. He’s held two of his last three opponents scoreless. In that span, he’s put together a 1.40 ERA and only walked four batters. It should be easy for him to keep the Astros quiet in the first as just about every team this year has been able to. They rank dead last in first inning runs at 0.21 per game.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 12: No (-115)
