MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – May 4

Cleveland Guardians vs. Toronto Blue Jays

First Pitch – 1:37 pm EST
Rogers Centre – Toronto, ON
Broadcast – MLB TV

To get our NRFI started right, we have Bowden Francis with the ball. The Red Sox roughed him up quite a bit in his last game. However, prior to that, he had been solid for the Blue Jays. He had carried just a 3.58 ERA into the game and hadn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his previous five starts. Facing the Guardians should help matters, especially early in the game. They rank in the bottom third of the league in terms of scoring in the first inning. As a result, I expect Francis to right the ship and get us three quick outs.

The bottom of the inning sees Tanner Bibee toe the rubber. He’s been really sharp in his last two starts, allowing just three earned runs in 13.0 innings of work. Those games were also against tough bats in the Yankees and the Twins. He’ll see a lot less competent of an offense north of the border.  Toronto is 27th in the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. Outside of the first inning isn’t much different either. They rank 26th in scoring across the whole game.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 4: No (-130)

Washington Nationals vs. Cincinnati Reds

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Great American Ballpark – Cincinnati, OH
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Nationals get the first crack at ruining an NRFI for us on Sunday. Nick Martinez will be the one trying to protect it for us and the home squad. He had a rocky start to the year, but he has settled in nicely. In his last two starts (11.2 innings), he’s only allowed three earned runs. That comes out to a 2.31 ERA in that short sample. Washington has been just a middle of the pack offense on the year, so if we see the Martinez we’ve seen of late, he should be able to get us out of there.

MacKenzie Gore gets the start for the Nationals and will try to take home our second NRFI. He has had some tall tasks in his last three starts. He faced the Phillies, had to throw at elevation and face a tough Orioles lineup – albeit one that is struggling. Despite that, he never allowed more than three runs in a game and twice held his opponents to two runs. He also racked up 27 strikeouts in 18.0 innings over that span.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for May 4: No (-135)
