MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – April 30

Detroit Tigers vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 2:10 pm EST
Daikin Park – Houston, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

In the top of the first, we’ll look for Jackson Jobe to get our NRFI started right. So far, he’s had a phenomenal start to this season – posting a 2-0 record with just a 2.70 ERA. Those numbers have looked even better as of late. He’s allowed just one earned run in his last two starts (11.0 total innings). While those numbers might be good enough to trust for an NRFI on their own, I also love that Houston has been struggling in the early parts of the game. They rank 29th in first inning runs per game with just 0.21.

Detroit has been much better with the bats – falling in or just outside of the top ten in most offensive metrics. In addition, they’ll also get a brand new pitcher in AJ Blubaugh, who got called up from Sugar Land this morning. While that might seem like a disaster, I like what I’ve seen from the young righty. In 21.0 minor league innings this year, he’s fanned 28 batters. He’s also only allowed one dinger all year. That combination of power pitching and keeping the ball in the park gives me the confidence he can get us an easy three outs.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 30: No (-115)

Athletics vs. Texas Rangers

First Pitch – 8:05 pm EST
Globe Life Field – Arlington, TX
Broadcast – MLB TV

The top of the first sees a surprisingly potent Athletics offense get their hacks against Nathan Eovaldi. One of the reasons that I like the NRFI here is that Eovaldi has looked sharp so far this season. Also, he’s kept his WHIP to just 0.74 on the year and has 38 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. He also hasn’t allowed an earned run in any of the last nine innings he’s pitched. With that kind of run going, I’m not going to count on the Athletics to change the narrative.

The bottom of the first will see the Rangers bats try to spoil our NRFI against Luis Severino. That’ll be a hard task for Texas for a couple of reasons. The first, and perhaps the biggest, is that they aren’t scoring many runs at any point in the game. They rank 25th in MLB in terms of runs scored with just 3.40 per game. The second reason is that Severino is locked in right now. His full year stats are pretty solid, but he’s been phenomenal over his last three starts. In those starts, he’s carried a 2.29 ERA and allowed just 13 hits in 19.2 innings.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for April 30: No (-115)
