MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 29

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, Massachusetts
Broadcast – ESPN+

Toronto will lead off the first in Boston on Thursday against Kutter Crawford. The Red Sox righty will look to get our NRFI started right against a team that hasn’t proven to be all that tough offensively. The Blue Jays rank in the bottom third of the league in runs scored this year. Additionally, they scored just three runs on Tuesday and got shutout during Wednesday’s action.

Crawford has been turning his luck around in the opposite direction. He faced a pair of tough offenses in his last two starts – the Diamondbacks and the Orioles – and held them to two and three runs respectively. This Blue Jays offense will feel like a break for him after those two.

The Red Sox have been hitting well as of late, but I’m still going to trust Bowden Francis to close out the NRFI. He pitched out of his mind last time out, taking a no-hitter into the 9th with 12 strikeouts. However, he had been good the three starts prior as well. In those starts, he threw 19.0 innings and allowed just three runs with 22 strikeouts. He should be able to get three outs early here before the Red Sox bats get going.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 29: No (-120)

Kansas City Royals vs. Houston Astros

First Pitch – 8:10 pm EST
Minute Maid Park – Houston, Texas
Broadcast – MLB TV

This is a game featuring two high octane offenses, but I’m going to ride the pitching matchup to a clean six outs here.

Hunter Brown will be the first to ply his trade in favor of our NRFI. In his last four starts (24.1 innings), he’s allowed just five earned runs. That comes out to a 1.85 ERA in that span. He’s done that while striking out 25 and facing some tough lineups in the process. It doesn’t matter how good the Royals are, I’ll trust the hot hand.

I feel the same way about the bottom of the inning with Brady Singer. Although he’s been hit a little harder lately, he carries a 3.38 ERA into Thursday’s action. Additionally, his strikeout numbers have gone up a notch. He has fanned 20 in his last three starts combined and that should help him if he were to get into any jams here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for August 29: No (-125)
