MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 5th

Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 5:00 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – TBS

We’re going with a rare YRFI play on Monday with the White Sox and the Guardians. A big part of that is because of the bats of the White Sox. This season, no team scored more runs in the first inning than the White Sox. They averaged 0.68 runs per game in the first inning – which would be over six runs per game if continued throughout the game. They’ll also get a crack at Gavin Williams, who has been off for nine days and got lit up in his last start. He gave up four runs to the Royals in 3.1 innings last time out. With as hot as the top of this White Sox lineup is, they should be able to get to him as well.

Cleveland wasn’t quite as good as the White Sox in the first inning. However, they did rank 7th in that stat category this season. They were even better at scoring in the first inning at home. They also have an easier matchup when it comes to Monday with Anthony Kay getting the ball. Kay put up a 5.48 ERA in the month of September and saw some issues with walking batters. Both of those should hurt him and help us cash that YRFI.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 5: Yes (+125)

New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays

First Pitch – 8:00 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, FL
Broadcast – TBS

The nightcap will give us an opportunity to get back to the NRFIs that we love so much. That’s because the Yankees were not nearly as good as those other squads when it comes to scoring in the first inning. In fact, despite their strong offense, they ranked in the bottom third of the league when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They’ll also try to break that trend against Freddy Peralta. He may just be the hottest pitcher in all of baseball. He put up a 0.96 ERA in the month of September and not once allowed more than one run in a start.

The Rays were also not a big first inning team. They came in just a touch below the league average when it comes to scoring in the first inning. If that’s not already enough of a reason to get in on this NRFI, then consider that they are facing the likely AL Cy Young winner. Cam Schlittler is getting his first start of the Divisional Series. He faced the Rays in his last start of the regular season and gave us a clean first frame in that one.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 5: No (-155)
