MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – October 3

Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians

First Pitch – 1:00 pm EST
Progressive Field – Cleveland, OH
Broadcast – TBS

Kicking off our first NRFI play of the divisional round will be Parker Messick. He’s going to be one of the finalists for the AL Rookie of the Year Award with the season he put together. He was 6th in the majors in ERA and 8th in WHIP – all while striking out 193 batters. Although the White Sox have been one of the better lineups this season at scoring early runs, I would trust Messick on solid rest against just about anyone coming through.

On the other side of things, we have a lineup that we can fade. Not only is Cleveland coming off of a long layoff that could mess with their timing, but they didn’t have much in the way of timing to begin with. They ranked 24th in the majors in run scoring with just 4.19 runs per game. That’s going to help out reliever Hagen Smith, who will serve as an opener yet again. He did that for 3.0 scoreless innings in the Wild Card round, which gives me some faith he could do it again here. His 1.29 regular season ERA doesn’t hurt either.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 3: No (-145)

New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays

First Pitch – 6:30 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, FL
Broadcast – TBS

We’ll look to the other American League series for our second NRFI play. The Yankees may have put up some ugly numbers on the Red Sox just now, but none of the 18 runs they scored in those two games came in the first inning. Perhaps that’s not a surprise given that they ranked 22nd in the majors in first inning scoring. That only gets harder with Drew Rasmussen on the bump. He had the third lowest WHIP in all of the majors and put up a 1.05 ERA in the month of September.

The rust factor is in play for the Rays as it’s now been the better part of a week since they’ve swung. Even when they were at their best, they were not much more than a middle of the pack lineup. Gerrit Cole was sparred a game three in New York and now has the pleasure of starting this series instead. He gave us a clean first three innings against the Rays in his last start of the regular season, and there’s no reason to doubt the encore.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for October 3: No (-140)

Bonus Pick: Braves/Dodgers NRFI (-130)
