Day 1 of the Wild Card Series was good to us with our first inning plays. The White Sox/Astros series gave us a rare YRFI and we’ll try to build off of that momentum. We have some NRFI bets for September 30.

MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 30
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves
First Pitch – 2:00 pm EST
Truist Park – Atlanta, GA
Broadcast – NBC
While these teams did not put together an NRFI in Game 1, they did show reasons why we should be able to trust it. Neither team seemed to really be able to put that much offense up. The two teams combined to strike out 19 times on Tuesday and managed just 13 combined hits. A couple of the runs scored on the day were due to a few misplayed balls by the outfield and some extra bases taken. With a game in the bag and a potential elimination on the horizon, I expect both to be a bit more buttoned up.
In addition to not trusting the offenses here, I also really like the pitching matchup. Cristopher Sanchez finished 11th in the majors in ERA and was in the top five for strikeouts. His counterpart will be Tyler Mahle, who might have been the steal of the deadline. After getting moved from the Giants, he was one of the very best pitchers in the majors. He posted a sub 2.00 ERA with a sub-1.00 WHIP in nine starts with the Braves.
NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 30: No (TBD)
Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
First Pitch – 8:00 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Broadcast – NBC
The matchup in the Bronx is asking for a Game 2 NRFI play. For one, only the Padres were worse than the Red Sox this season when it comes to scoring in the first inning. They scored just 0.43 runs per game in the first inning. Now they have to deal with Max Fried, who is rocking a 2.80 ERA on the year. He not only has all of the credentials to keep Boston quiet for three outs, but he already showed us he could do it with a sharp start back in late-August against them.
Although the Yankees are a bit better in the first inning, they still rank in the bottom third of the league in that category. They also have to face one of the best pitchers in the majors this year in Sonny Gray. He posted a top-10 ERA in the majors this year and was even stronger down the stretch. His September ERA came in at 2.13 and we saw a nice spike in his strikeouts. For those reasons, we’ll trust him to get us a clean frame.
