We’re gearing up for a great Saturday of College Football. Iowa and Michigan face off against each other in Ann Arbor on Saturday. It’s a Big Ten game that matters because both teams sit at 3-0. This Iowa-Michigan betting preview and picks look at a game that will set an early tone in the conference race.
17th-ranked Iowa walks into the Big House at 3-0 after a 40-0 win over Northern Illinois, a 16-13 grind against Iowa State, and a 55-0 demo of Northern Iowa. 18th-ranked Michigan is 3-0 after a 13-12 Hail Mary escape against Western Michigan, a 17-10 win over Oklahoma, and a 52-17 beatdown of UTEP.
Michigan has won the last four meetings, including the 2023 Big Ten title game. Iowa last beat the Wolverines in 2016. Now the rematch is in Ann Arbor, the line sits at 5.5, and both coaches know a loss puts them behind early. Let’s take a look at the full Iowa vs. Michigan preview, picks, and best bets.
Iowa vs. Michigan Betting Preview, Picks, And Best Bets
Location: Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, MI
Saturday, September 26th, 2026 on CBS at 12:30 PT, 3:30 PM ET
Spread: Iowa (+5.5) | Michigan (-5.5)
Total: Over/Under 38.5 (-110 both sides)
Moneyline: Iowa +180 | Michigan -220
Why Iowa Could Cover (+5.5)
Iowa could cover by doing what it has done all season. That’s leaning on one of the nation’s stingiest defenses and forcing Michigan into long-yardage situations. The Hawkeyes allow an average of 4.3 points per game and 176.7 yards per game. They’ve already posted two shutouts. Of course, that wasn’t against teams of the same caliber as Michigan.
Hank Brown is 45-of-62 for 473 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Iowa doesn’t need a perfect passing attack to stay on schedule. They run the ball well, control the clock, and rely on their defense.
The other side of the cover is the Iowa State game tape. Iowa won a one-score game without looking pretty. Michigan wants to run the ball, and Iowa has stuffed opponents at 2.2 yards per carry. If the Hawkeyes get Bryce Underwood into obvious passing downs, the 5.5-point cushion becomes a one-possession game that Iowa has already shown it can win. Staying out of a turnover battle is the only real requirement. If they keep that clean, this is a live cover and live dog on the Moneyline.
Why Michigan Could Cover (-5.5)
For the Wolverines to cover, this has to feel like a Kyle Whittingham home game instead of a rerun of Iowa’s defensive clinics. Michigan already owns a ranked win over Oklahoma. The response at home against a ranked Big Ten opponent is the exact spot a first-year staff uses to prove it belongs.
Bryce Underwood is the reason Michigan is favored. He has 506 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, one interception, 156 rushing yards, and two rushing scores in three starts. Against Oklahoma, he had 87 rushing yards and a score. He is a dual-threat problem. If Michigan can get him on the edge and keep Iowa’s front from teeing off, the Wolverines can win the possession battle and make this a dogfight on their home turf.
They need to protect the ball, lean on Underwood’s legs when the pocket collapses, and hope Iowa’s early-season dominance against weaker foes doesn’t travel. One short field or one Brown mistake and this 5.5 could become an easy cover for Michigan.
Iowa-Michigan Game Total Pick
As far as the Iowa vs. Michigan picks go, this may be my favorite. Both of these defenses are built to take away chunk plays. Neither offense has looked like a unit that can score in bunches against a top-10 defense. Iowa has gone under in two of three games and has allowed 13 points all year. Michigan has gone under in two of three games and allows 13 points per game.
Kirk Ferentz and Kyle Whittingham both prefer complementary football over shootouts. Iowa averages 37 points against weaker teams, but Michigan’s defense is not a weaker team. That combination screams a 20-13 grind. Even if one side finds a score, the other is capable of answering with a field goal. I’m taking under 38.5 points.
Hank Brown Under 155.5 Passing Yards
This number is another one I like in the Iowa vs. Michigan picks. Brown doesn’t need a perfect script to stay under this number. He had 191 yards in a tight Iowa State game. However, in the two blowouts, he stayed under this number. Michigan has allowed just 123.7 passing yards per game.
Brown will get some looks, but this Iowa team is going to want to run the ball early and often. Michigan’s front and secondary should keep Brown from having an explosive game. Not to mention, when’s the last time you saw a Hawkeye quarterback have an explosive game?
Final Pick: Iowa +5.5
Iowa is the higher-ranked team, and they have the better defense in my opinion, and already showed they can win ugly games. The market is asking you to fade them because Michigan is at home and Underwood looks like the real deal. It’s a fair argument, but I’m not convinced.
Michigan’s offense has not been a finished product against good defenses, and the Wolverines have lived on close wins. Brown will have enough time to manage the game. Whether Iowa wins or not, this one is going to stay close.
This will be a defensive slug-fest and I see it coming down to a field goal.
