Some early home runs and a thin schedule made Thursday an NRFI landmine. We’ll look to rebound from all of the craziness on Friday. We have some NRFI bets for August 28.

MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – August 28
San Diego Padres vs. Tampa Bay Rays
First Pitch – 7:10 pm EST
Tropicana Field – St. Petersburg, FL
Broadcast – MLB TV
The Padres stumble into Florida having struggled hard with the bats recently. The series with the Pirates saw them score just five total runs over the three-game set. That’s not terribly surprising being as they rank in the bottom third of the league in run scoring. They also are 29th in the league in terms of first inning scoring – which may be more important for our purposes here. That’s unlikely to pick up when they face Shane McClanahan, who enters action with a 3.10 ERA.
Tampa Bay has a much stronger lineup than the Padres, but they are also not terribly hot. They rank right around league average when it comes to scoring and yet have scored just 13 runs in their last five games combined (a 2.60 runs per game average). With them also ranking in the bottom third of the league in first inning scoring, we can put our trust in Casey Mize. The new Padres has looked solid since joining the West coast squad.

Texas Rangers vs. Milwaukee Brewers
First Pitch – 7:40 pm EST
American Family Field – Milwaukee, WI

The top of the first shouldn’t be much of a sweat for us here. Logan Henderson will get the ball and he has really lit things up for the Brew Crew. He’s rocking a 2.60 ERA on the year with 10.25 strikeouts per nine innings. He’s also been even hotter than that lately – holding six of his last seven opponents to two or less runs. With the Rangers ranking 28th in the majors in run scoring, I doubt they change that tune with Henderson on the bump.
Milwaukee is most likely the team that will bring that sweat with the bats. They rank towards the top of the league in most of the offensive metrics that could ruin this for us. However, they have scored just 18 runs over the last five games, which comes out to 3.60 runs per game. Eight of those runs came in just one game, which puts into perspective how much they have struggled. Hopefully that means that Cody Bradford can nail down the NRFI for us. He has a 3.05 ERA over four starts so far, and has the chance to be a hero for us here in the first.
