England’s 2.00 goals per game have them ranked 3rd in the tournament, whereas France ranks 2nd with 2.29. Nobody in the tournament has more attempts on goals than France and England is just second when it comes to attempts in the box. With numbers like this, we already would like the over. However, we like it even more when you consider the history of this game.
With the game being for third place, there is typically a freedom that the teams play with. This almost always leads to more scoring. If you look at the history of the third place game, there has only been one game since 1974 that didn’t have at least three goals in it. That would be when Belgium beat England 2-0 in 2018.
In terms of a winner, I have to favor France in this one. While their defense showed issues in the match with Spain, they are much sharper through the back. Mike Maignan has put together a solid tournament in the net and should be able to limit England enough to keep their attack on top.
